No more automatic employment for nurses – Health minister declares

Health Minister Alex Segbefia says his outfit will soon begin to implement a system where nurses will have to apply and justify their suitability in the health sector.

According to him, the practice where nurses are automatically employed by the Ghana Health Service would be cancelled.
He revealed this at a public sensitisation forum held in Ho for the conversion of the Volta regional hospital into a teaching hospital.

He opined that government’s agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) necessitated the decision to enable it reduce the wage bill.

“ The trainee nurses will have to join the job market just as any other graduate after their training, ”

“ … if we are not bonding we will not need to give you allowances because soon, by 2018, you will get to the point where all nurses that qualify will be like any university graduate that finishes university…” he stated.

“ But by 2018/2019 what is going to happen is, we will look at your grade; it will be advertised like anyone else’s job because you cannot assume that you are just going to walk through the school, get the minimum grade and get a job, it will not happen,” Mr Segbefia said.
