Rihanna “Works”- Her Way to Another No. 1 Hit—and Surpasses Michael Jackson

Rihanna has had to put it mildly, an up-and-down few weeks. Her highly, highly-anticipated eighth album, Anti , debuted a few weeks ago in . . . somewhat haphazard fashion, getting leaked, and then, ultimately, posted on Tidal, where it was given away for free thanks to a deal with Samsung. The album eventually hit No. 1 on the Billboard charts, after its first full week out on the market. So, things were, momentarily, looking sunnier. But then Rihanna cancelled her Grammys performance last-minute (due to bronchitis) and also postponed the first eight dates of her forthcoming Anti World Tour (due to . . . it’s not quite clear).
After that period of cloudy skies, though, things are looking up again for the pop star. She turned 28 on Saturday, celebrating in characteristic Rihanna fashion , and then, today, dropped the video for her first single, “Work,” which is a two-for-one deal, in which, in the first video, she and Drake dance provocatively in a dancehall club . . . and, in the second, she and Drake dance provocatively . . . in a private room. And it’s a fitting day for the clip to debut, as Billboard announced today the song has
reached No. 1 on the Hot 100 , making it the 14th song of Rihanna’s to climb to the top. This puts the superstar past Michael Jackson, leaving her shy only of the Beatles (20), Elvis Presley (18), and Mariah Carey (18). So, Rihanna needs seven more No. 1 hits over the rest of her career to reach the top, which seems pretty possible.
